Part three of our overwintering series - Keeping chickens warm and healthy over a cold winter

  • Ensure there is enough bedding in the chicken house for warmth
  • Check the water regularly to see if it is frozen
  • If grass fed and it’s covered in snow give them greens eg kale, broccoli or spinach
  • Collect eggs in the morning in case they freeze in the day
  • Give extra corn in their feed to provide them more body warmth
  • Attach chicken wire underneath the hen house to prevent rats getting in
  • Make sure they can get access to a covered cleaning bed of sand or soil, or use diatomaceous earth in their coop after removing poop
